CMHA Beyond Bricks & Mortar

Breaking the cycle of poverty in Cincinnati has been the hot topic in the news over the past several months. CMHA is not just about bricks and mortar; it has been helping reduce poverty in Hamilton County for years. The agency promotes self-sufficiency by partnering with organizations that provide training or information on health and wellness, job skills, education and other potential barriers to self-sufficiency. First Learning is a new CMHA mission driven initiative focused on promoting self-sufficiency through local early childhood development efforts.

CMHA team members Robert Bell and Luis Paris are working with Melissa McCoy, Director of Collaborative Continuous Improvement for StrivePartnership and KnolwedgeWorks, to lay the foundation for First Learning. Paris said, "If we truly wish to break the cycle of poverty, we must support childhood development and education of our high risk children."

Parental involvement is important to the educational success of children as Bell points out, "The parent really should be the child's first teacher but the parent needs to be trained and given adequate support as well." The new initiative will give parents the tools needed to become "teachers".First Learning is an early childhood education initiative targeting children 18 months to 5 years old as well as their parents. Some of the services families will receive as part of the initiative include: educational and learning games for the child, parental engagement activities & training in learning practices, social-emotional support, alpha-phonics training, reading & comprehension training and much more.

The initial program will work with CMHA residents in Millvale and the Price Hill and Downtown areas. Daddy's Day Care and Orion Academy have already agreed to be a part of First Learning.
